617 South Crests Rd, is located on the "military crest" of historic Missionary Ridge. (For those not familiar with the civil war may we suggest you Google "Battle of Missionary Ridge.")
It is agreed by most historians that the South lost the war when it lost the battle of Missionary Ridge. "The beginning of the end," so to speak. The loss opened the gateway to the South allowing Grant and his Generals to take Atlanta and Sherman's "march to the sea" and take Savannah.
A short distance north of the house is the spot that, then Second Lieutenant Arthur McArthur of the Wisconsin National Guard, and later General, won the Congressional Medal of Honor by taking the unit colors from a fallen comrade and dashing to the top yelling "On Wisconsin." Arthur was the father of General Douglas McArthur of WW1, WW2 and Korean War fame and who also won the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Artifacts of the civil war have been found on the property. A confederate rifle pit may still be seen on the lower part of the acreage.
